Helping Hedgehogs
Feeding hedgehogs
A good way to encourage hedgehogs to inhabit your garden is to support feed them. Put out a dish of food and a (shallow) bowl of fresh water every evening, or as often as you can.
Please NEVER offer hedgehogs milk or bread. Hedgehogs are lactose intolerant & bread has very little nutritional value.

Hedgehog houses & feeding stations
To prevent cats & foxes eating the food you put out for hedgehogs, make (see image) or buy a 'feeding station'.
A 'hedgehog house' provides a safe, dry place for hedgehogs to sleep. Often they will hibernate in hedgehog houses or even have their young in them.

Hedgehog friendly gardening
- Access. Can hedgehogs easily get in & out of you garden? Make a CD sized hole in your fence or wall to ensure they can come & go. Encourage your neighbours to do the same to create a 'hedgehog highway'.
- Shelter. Are there places for hedgehogs to hide? Leave an area of your garden wild, or place a hedgehog house/feeding station under a bush or hedge.
- Food. Is there a food supply for hedgehogs in your garden? Try making a log pile to encourage invertebrates to move in (hedgehogs natural food), or put out meaty cat or dog food & water.
- Safety. Are there any dangers to hedgehogs? Cover drains, ensure hedgehogs can get out of ponds & pools, do not use slug pellets & keep netting off the ground.
